Blog 2: Song Analysis of "What For?" by Aisha & How It Connects to Latvia's National Identity

Blog Post 1 Summary & Recap In my previous blog post, I investigated and tried to define Latvia's national identity. Key takeaways from that post were that Latvia is a Baltic State, one of three countries under the 'Baltic umbrella' which share similar cultures. However, Latvia has had a strong relationship with the Soviet Union, that relationship having helped to shape Latvia's identity. In the present day, Latvia focuses on separating itself from its previous occupier, which it does by alienating the minority population of ethnic Russians in Latvia. National Identity and the 'Other' Latvia   has a distinguished national identity, and while it can be claimed to be alike other bordering countries, it is unique largely in the relationship it has with other countries and how it treats its minority groups. There is a blend of many cultures coming together inside of Latvia due to past relationships it has had with other countries, creating a unique "melting pot" culture, which is largely due to it being in the centre of many countries geographically.  What is National Identity? Hi everyone!!   This will be a blog about Latvia and their involvement in Eurovision!  I was interested in looking more into specifically Latvia's performances in Eurovision, as their 2022 entry caught my attention and I wanted to see if there was a running theme of the country's past performances! I don't have too much background knowledge about Latvia or the other Baltic countries, which made me more excited to look into them! I tend to enjoy the Baltic country's submissions for ESC, so I'm hoping to have fun while researching more about them and the country!
